Aerophobe to Aviator
A memoir by Nikolas Gonzales

It begins as a fragile attempt to understand turbulence — mechanical and psychological — and becomes a sustained inquiry into the nature of fear itself.

Advance Praise
“Many pilots have written about flight. Fewer have done it well. So first, let’s be clear: Nick Gonzales here renders aviation superbly.” Matthew Hay Brown — The Washington Post
“There is a kind of honesty in this book that cannot be faked. From the beginning, it is clear that Nikolas Gonzales lived every part of this story.” Robert Ramirez — Poet, Founder of the Brown Book Club

This is not simply a memoir about flying, but a study of limits when confronted with visceral dread and unfathomable enlightenment.

What the Book Is

An Accidental Aviation Memoir

What begins as a fragile attempt to understand turbulence, both mechanical and psychological, evolves into a sustained inquiry into the nature of fear itself. In the disciplined space of flight training, abstraction dissolves.

At its core, this is a memoir of anxiety, community, and self-discovery — tracing the slow dismantling of an identity organized around avoidance.

The cockpit becomes both laboratory and crucible, where failure is undeniable and progress demands not confidence, but sustained exposure to discomfort.

With a voice that is at once self-critical, observant, and darkly humorous, it invites readers into an experience as intellectually engaging as it is emotionally arresting.

The Writer

Nikolas Gonzales

Writer, Teacher, Capoeirista, Pilot
Nikolas Gonzales is a writer, educator, lifelong practitioner of capoeira, and a pilot, who has spent much of his life navigating the uneasy space between curiosity and doubt. Raised between cultures and shaped perspective of his humble roots, he built a life defined by movement across countries, disciplines, and communities, while quietly wrestling with questions of identity, purpose, and belonging. His path has never been driven by certainty. Instead, it has been marked by a willingness to step into unfamiliar territory, even when instinct said to hold back.

As a writer, Gonzales brings that same unfiltered honesty to the page, drawing from lived experience rather than polished conclusions. His voice is reflective, grounded, and at times disarmingly direct, capturing the tension of wanting more out of life while not always knowing how to claim it. Whether in the classroom, in training, or through his writing, he returns to the same idea: that growth is less about confidence and more about persistence and the decision to keep moving forward, even when you’re not entirely sure you belong.
